Community Values

Our community values were established when SICCA was founded in 2002. They are the result of collaboration between SICCA's 10 founding families and reflect our fundamental goals. Lloyd outlines these values in the above video, they include:

1.) To be a community where children can identify with their Solomon Island family and maintain cultural identity.

2.) Support the Solomon Islands High Commission's work in Canberra.

3.) Unite to celebrate significant days on Solomon Island's calendar.

4.) Welcome and receive Solomon Islander students and visitors.

5.) Promote and showcase Solomon Islands to Canberra.

Our Values: About Us

1.) Our Children

Our SICCA community was built by families, for families. We focus on enriching the lives of our children by creating safe and happy spaces for them to meet and bond with other Solomon Islanders. These spaces help them learn about their culture, language, foods, spiritual practices and provide opportunities to learn about and practice traditional dances, songs, art and knowledges.

2.) Support the High Commission

A privilege of living in the ACT and neighbouring region is our proximity to the Solomon Islands High Commission. This means we get to attend offical events, mingle with High Commission staff and our students have the opportunity to intern at their office.  We have made it our goal to support the important work our staff do in Canberra, whether it be by helping to cook for events, performing traditional songs and dances for ministerial visits or simply welcoming staff to Canberra, our community has been involved with the High Commission since it first started.

3.) Unite and Celebrate

We maintain our community and connections to home by celebrating important dates on Solomon Islands calendars. This includes Independence Day Celebrations, Provincial Days, Christmas, New Years and more!

4.) Welcome and Receive

At SICCA, we are dedicated to making our wantoks feel at home when they visit or move to the ACT and regional NSW. We make sure their transition is comfortable and help them integrate into their new communities. We also take initiative and cook for different community events including: ministerial visits, welcomes and farewells, weddings and more!

5.) Promote and Showcase Solomon Islands

SICCA members are proud of our diverse cultures and roots. We enjoy opportunities to showcase and share our culture with friends and family in our local and national areas. We are regular performers at the Canberra Multicultural Festival and perform dances and songs from all of Solomon Islands nine provinces including: Central Province, Choiseul, Guadacanal, Isabel, Makira-Ulawa, Malaita, Rennel and Bellona, Temotu and Western Province.

Our Values Orient Our Actions

The above values have guided SICCA for the past 19 years, and brought our community together. They are the backbone of our community and exhibited best in our leadership team.
